Key Background

Ford Motor Company will be recalling over 694,000 vehicles in the United States. The recalled vehicles are certain 2021–2024 Bronco Sport and 2020–2022 Escape SUVs with 1.5-liter turbocharged engines. The worse part is damaged fuel injectors that leak gasoline into the engine compartment and subsequently ignite when the fuel burns some very hot engine parts.

The recall comes from ongoing Ford investigations beginning in 2022, having issued previous recalls in 2022, 2024, and early 2025 that failed to stop the cause of the problem. The latest testing confirmed eight fires under the hood caused by cracked injectors, the majority of which were on vehicles yet to see updated software patches. Though no accidents had been reported, fire risk caused Ford to move quickly.

As an immediate answer, new engine control software which has the ability to detect sudden low fuel rail pressure will be installed by Ford dealerships. This software has the capability to reduce the engine power and alert drivers to issues. A drain tube will also be installed to route leaked fuel away from hot engine parts so ignition will not occur. An ongoing solution is underway.

The owners who have been affected will be contacted on August 18, 2025, and notified once again when the final repair is ready. The owners are advised to get their cars brought into dealerships so that the temporary fix can be done at no cost. Ford confirmed that while fire reports are not in great quantity, the recall is being conducted as a precautionary measure to ensure vehicles continue to be safe.
