Background
OpenAI announced ChatGPT Health, a new feature that lets users securely link their medical records and wellness apps to the ChatGPT chatbot. The company said the feature aims to help people better understand and manage everyday health and wellness questions.
OpenAI said ChatGPT Health does not diagnose illnesses or give treatment. Instead, it helps users by sharing more useful and personalized information based on their health data and encourages them to keep relying on medical professionals.
Fidji Simo, CEO of applications at OpenAI, said the launch is part of a broader effort to make ChatGPT a more useful personal assistant. In a post on Substack, she said the tool is designed to support users with information and tools that help them reach goals across different parts of their lives, including health.
OpenAI said ChatGPT Health has a dedicated space within the chatbot. All health-related files, conversations, and connected apps remain separate from other chats. The company added that information shared within ChatGPT Health will not flow outside that space and will not be used to train its foundation AI models.
OpenAI has partnered with b.well, a company that connects health data, to let users access their medical records securely. Users can link their records to ChatGPT Health and also connect popular wellness apps like Apple Health, MyFitnessPal, Weight Watchers, Function, and others through the settings menu.
The company said it developed ChatGPT Health in close collaboration with physicians to ensure responsible use. OpenAI has increased its focus on healthcare in recent months. CEO Sam Altman has previously said healthcare is one of the areas where AI can bring strong improvements.
ChatGPT Health will first be rolled out to a small group of early users who will provide feedback. OpenAI said it plans to expand access more widely in the coming weeks.
