Background
General Motors and Chinese company SAIC Motor have agreed to prolong their partnership in China for several decades into the future, despite the initial expiration date that was set for next year.
This development has been made amid the transformation in China’s auto industry, where local companies have emerged very rapidly to displace the existing Western brands and old joint ventures. GM did not disclose financial details of the agreement, which arrives amid heightened tensions between the US and China, including discussions around a potential US ban on Chinese vehicles and brands.
The most notable change is the length of the deal. The original agreement, signed in 1997, ran for 30 years. The companies have now agreed to a 20-year extension of the 50-50 joint venture, taking it through to 2047.
GM said the venture will focus on domestic sales of Buick and Cadillac models in China, alongside exporting Chevrolet and other China-built products to markets outside the US. GM China President John Roth said the company remained committed to strong performance in China, while also seeing opportunities in international markets including the Middle East, Africa, South America, Mexico and Asia-Pacific.
China was GM’s top sales market between 2010 and 2023, but shifting market dynamics prompted restructuring at the company and its joint ventures. GM’s equity income from China fell sharply in recent years, following two consecutive years of losses before recovering to $248 million in the first half of this year. The joint venture has produced and delivered more than 20 million vehicles since its founding.
