Background

Google has launched an AI-based feature named Mixboard that allows the user to build digital mood boards by just typing in text prompts. The product, launched under Google Labs as a public beta in the U.S., takes direct aim at Pinterest’s popular collage-making features.

Unlike Pinterest, where users collect and organize images to design boards, Mixboard allows anyone to start from scratch using AI. By typing prompts such as “modern living room design” or “birthday party ideas,” users can instantly generate conceptual boards. There are also pre-populated templates, so a person can be inspired or start quickly.

Mixboard is powered by Nano Banana, Google’s latest image editing model, which has received strong feedback for its ability to handle detailed edits and create realistic visuals. Users can refine their boards by asking the AI to make small changes, merge images, or regenerate content for fresh ideas. The tool can also generate text based on the images placed on a board.

Google said Mixboard could be useful for brainstorming home decor, event planning, DIY projects, or creative content ideas. The launch follows the success of Google’s Gemini AI app, which recently overtook ChatGPT on the U.S. App Store.

The new service also taps into a growing trend among younger users who enjoy making digital collages and mood boards. Pinterest saw similar success with its Shuffles app, while other startups like Verse explored the same space.
